Google has been displaying search results localized for the location of the user since long. Since the Google updates in 2012 to search and maps, Localized Organic results have been enhanced even for broad search queries (where location is not specified and is not related to a local place or business) with the new Google Maps, and a local search result display called the “carousel”.
The carousel display is an interactive, horizontal panel of local search results and replaces the A-G vertical pinned display that Google uses to show local results. It appears as a scrolling list of images for each business / place. Clicking on any gives details such as address, opening hours, and reviews / ratings. It has rolled out in U.S. ; you can see the carousel when you search for places (e.g., tourist places) in India. The carousel is changing user’s behavior in a profound way : instead of tending to click at the top results of the A-G vertical pinned display, users are tending to click images in the middle of carousel, and are more attracted to beautiful photographs.
The new Google Maps can be accessed currently by invitation. Search results are pinned directly on the map with specific icons for business categories. It has gone rich and ‘social’. If you click on any individual business result, you will get detailed information such as street views, Zagat ratings for restaurants, reviews from multiple sources, opening hours, whether anyone in your Google+ social network liked the place.
